CBMA Facial Hair Course Outline

Day One:

  • Discussion of different beard shapes (with photographs), the difference between face beards and laying on, different lace, various types of hair, glues, cleaning fluids and tools
  • Students will be given a facial hair kit
  • Discussion of experiences on-set: how weather conditions, sweat, etc. affect beards and other facial hair pieces
  • Demonstration of taking a shape and explanation about the growth of hair
  • How to instruct a beard maker when sending off a shape
  • Practise of taking shapes
  • Demonstration of mixing hair (hackle and hand)
  • Discussion of the different colours of hair and facial hair
  • Stubble demonstration and practise (time permitting)

Day Two:

  • Stubble practice
  • Blocking demonstration
  • Blocking practise
  • Tonging demonstration
  • Tonging practise
  • Students choose full beards and moustaches for application on day three

Day Three:

  • Demonstration of the application and removal of sideburns
  • Students practise the application, removal, cleaning dressing and re-application of side-burns (to understand the importance of preparation)
  • Demonstration of the application of a full beard
  • Students apply full beards and moustaches selected on day two

Day Four:

  • Demonstration of laying on
  • Students practise laying on blocks and tonging
  • Eyebrow demonstration
  • Students practise eyebrow application

Day Five:

  • Students take a shape again (to note the difference from day one!)
  • Students select a full set of facial hair and make it work!  (matching to sides, laying on where needed, etc)
  • Removal, cleaning and re-dressing of all facial hair
  • Students choose a period style, select appropriate facial hair and practise application (time permitting)
