CBMA Basic Make-up Course Outline

Day One: Laying the foundations & Make-up Basics

MORNING

  • Preparing your client: basic skincare, hygiene and cleanliness, skin conditions and allergies
  • Preparing the skin for make-up and selecting your products based on oily/dry/combination skin types
  • Corrective products and techniques, and skin tone considerations
  • Foundations and bases: the choice of products and methods of application
  • Concealors & neutralizers: the choice of products and methods of application
  • Shading & highlighting:  use of both matte and shimmer/reflective products
  • Blush varieties and effects
  • Face powder, blotting and anti shine: the choice of products and methods of application
  • Natural eyebrows and lashes: curling and brushing

AFTERNOON

  • Students practise skills learned in the morning session on each other
  • Discussion of the importance of blending and checking the make-up at 360º and in different lights

 

Day Two: Natiral Make-up & Definition

MORNING

  • Eyebrows: Different methods of shaping and correction
  • Eyes: Preparing the eyes (a natural lid), application of eye shadow, contouring and blending, eye definition with pencils and other liners, mascara and eye lashes
  • Lips: Preparing the lips and conditioning, shaping the lips, correcting and balancing, lip definition using pencils, stains, gloss and matte products, the classic red lipstick, the nude/ pale look.

AFTERNOON

Students practise skills learned in the morning session on each other to demonstrate:

  • Preparation of the eyelid and lips: natural eye make-up and natural or corrective lip finish
  • Building up of colour to create a more contoured eye with a stronger lip finish

 

DAY THREE: MORE EYE WORK AND CREATING A LOOK (1)

MORNING

  • Smoky eye make-up and application of false eyelashes
  • Colour washing and creative eye make-up
  • Students are to bring in at least 3 images of make-up looks and select two different make-up styles to achieve.
  • Discussion of different methods of achieving these looks and effects
  • Discussion of researching, creating mood boards and use of images in proposing and creating a make-up look
  • Discussion of period and fashion source material and real life observations
  • Photographing your work and practising

AFTERNOON

Students practise skills learned in the morning session on each other to demonstrate:

  • Either a smoky or a creative eye make-up look (can include false lashes if desired)
  • Creation of one of the make-ups styles from the individual images brought in and discussed

 

Day Four: Creating a Look (2) - What's in your Kit? Troubleshooting

MORNING

  • Students practise skills learned in day three’s morning session on each other to demonstrate the second make-up look selected from images brought in
  • Crit session: discussion of how well the intended make-up effects were achieved

AFTERNOON

Discussion “What’s in your kit and how to use it”: brushes and sponges- types, techniques and preferences, economy of means and thinking ahead

  • Your make-up station, efficiency & etiquette
  • Location and on-set issues, weather conditions
  • Call times and timing a make-up
  • Working in solo situations and as part of a team
  • Students put together a character breakdown or a description/design of make-up using the CBMA library if required.  This will draw together all skills taught this week

 

Day Five: Undertaking a Character/Design Brief

MORNING

  • Students use the skills learned so far this week to carry out the character breakdown/design brief they prepared on day four within a set timeframe
  • Crit session: discussion of the results

AFTERNOON

  • Ethnic skin tones
  • Male grooming
  • Mature skin and hyper-sensitive skin types
  • Discussion of things to consider when working with photo shoots, films, Hi-definition, stage shows and live events
  • Pop quiz on the content of the week’s course
  • Students choose to practise (time permitting) something demonstrated this week that they feel they need to work on e.g. a corrective make-up, contouring and highlighting, male grooming
