The CB*MA Foundation Course has been specially tailored by industry expert, Christine Blundell to give you the breadth and depth of knowledge you will need to start your career as a professional make-up artist.
The following outline is a summary of the areas in which you will receive a thorough, basic grounding. The order may change (as our tutors are all active industry professionals when they aren’t in the classroom and their work can be a little unpredictable!) but you will cover all of the following during your twelve week course:
The face is your primary canvas. You will learn to look at the face and analyse it: learn, at a glance, to determine skin type, colour and tone – an essential skill that will enable you to determine the materials you’ll need to achieve any desired look. You will learn basic application of make-up for different skin tones, face shapes, etc. More detail…
As a make-up artist you will often be expected to style hair. This week you will learn basic sectioning, cutting and layering, styling (as well as styling for period features) and application of treatments. More detail…

Wigs are an extremely specialist area, and you could spend years studying the art of wig-making. The two weeks you spend on this fascinating topic will give you a thorough historical, technical and practical grounding so that you can deal confidently with wigs and hair pieces. More detail…
This week is not for the faint-hearted! Get ready for the blood and gore. You will learn everything from understanding the cause of a wound and how that impacts on its appearance, to creating wounds, scars, skin break-outs, tears and sweat, dirtying down, bruises, and other special effects. More detail…
You will, forever more, be in high demand from your friends at fancy dress time after completing this fortnight! We will teach you about the various prosthetic materials out there, sculpting basic prosthetics (including wounds and a nose), silicone moulding and facial casting, application of gelatine prosthetics, eye bags, ageing with prosthetics and making and applying bald caps. More detail…
Theatre make-up is quite a different art, requiring different materials and methods of application. During the course of this week you will learn to use pan sticks and grease pallets, facial shaping, eye shaping, ageing, theatre and character work using make-up, wigs, bald caps, old age stipple (latex) and facial hair. More detail…
We always have a bit of a giggle this week getting you all looking a bit more hairy! You’ll cover laying on facial hair with loose hair, full chin and moustache, application of beards, moustaches, eyebrows and sideburns, knotting facial hair to mend pieces and create your own, taking actors’ measurements for having facial hair made, tonging and mixing colours on hackles. More detail…
We are not aware of any other courses that offer this training but as Christine tends to use hair extensions on most films, we thought that a little knowledge on this would be invaluable. And they look great when done well! We’ll cover everything from application of real hair extensions to care, colour matching and removal. More detail…
Get ready to be put though your paces! During your final fortnight you will be joined by Christine Cant whose aim it will be to assess what you have learned, find out your strengths and weaknesses and give a bit more focus to any areas that you feel (or we feel) may need it. She will bring together all of your newly learned technical knowledge and show you how to be a fully-functioning member of a professional make-up team.
By now you will have a good idea of how to achieve any particular look. Each of you will have a specific project assigned to you: a specific look that you will need to prepare for and, ultimately, create on a model.
Christine will get you used to quickly and competently fulfilling any brief that you are given – a little taste of real life from the safety of the Academy. From research and advance preparations, to selecting your kit and setting up on the day, you will be shown all of the practical ‘on-the-job’ skills you will need to put your new found technical expertise to the test.
More detail…
Over the course of the previous weeks you will also be taught how to prepare a script breakdown – an invaluable skill for any trainee – which we will review with you individually.
